Since the second time I read the book I've wondered the same exact thing and it drvies me mad!. I think it was Edward but we'll find out in Midnight Sun!. SM does that a couple times with things, and I think she was setting it up for Midnight Sun!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Bella woke up to a frozen Forks, and was discouraged before she headed off to school!. She was especially careful on the road because she knew the ground was so slippery, but she realized she was having no trouble at all!. She parked carefully, anyways, at her school, then went to investigate!. She found snow chains diamond-crossed on her truck's tires!. Charlie, she thought!. She was used to taking care of Renee, and was not used to being looked out for, therefore touched by his concern!.
Then Tyler slipped with his car and nearly killed Bella, with Vampire Edward coming to Superman the Day!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Bella said Charlie put the snow chains on!. That's why she was staring at them, and almost got ran over-- she wasn't used to being taken care of by a parent, because she always took care of Renee!.
At least Bella thinks it was Charlie!. We can't be completely sure because we, as readers, are limited to Bella's point of view in Twilight!. I guess we'll find out for sure in Midnight Sun, though I think we'll find it was Charlie (though I wish it were Edward!.)Www@QuestionHome@Com
