Question: A question from Pride and Prejudice!.!.!.!?
What does this quote tell you about Jane's character!?

"Beyond a doubt, they do wish him to choose Miss Darcy,” replied Jane; “but this may be from better feelings than you are supposing!. They have known her much longer than they have known me; no wonder if they love her better!. But, whatever may be their own wishes, it is very unlikely they should have opposed their brother’s!."

also, what does she exactly mean by the last sentence!? Overall I think this proves her low self-esteem and little confidence!. Am I right!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

This quote tells you Jane's character: she is modest and humble, always thinking the best about everybody, never believing that people may be manipulative or do wrong!. She is intelligent, but she never thinks poorly of anyone!.

That last sentence tells you that she won't believe that Mr!. Bingley's sisters would ever purposely thwart their brother's wishes!. In other words, Jane believed that if they knew he liked Jane, they would have no reason, nor would they, oppose his wishes!. Instead Jane thinks they would give up their own desire to have him wed Miss Darcy, if they believed he loved Jane!.

If you read further, you'll see that Elizabeth gives Jane good reasons as to why Miss Bingley and Mrs!. Hurst would purposely oppose his wishes and separate Mr!. Bingley and Jane!. Jane is wrong, Elizabeth is right, but Jane won't see it until she has proof!.

Jane doesn't lack either self-esteem or confidence in herself!. In fact, she is quietly confident!. It is merely that she believes the best of every person and won't believe otherwise unless she's, figuratively, smacked in the face with facts that tell her differently!.

I hope that helps!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I see the passage instead as illustrating Jane's tendency to think the best of everyone!. She attributes the Bingley sisters' desire for their brother to marry Miss Darcy to the fact that she is closer to them than Jane is rather than to their social-climbing ambitions, and she can't imagine that they would thwart their brother's own desires--i!. e!. that they would deliberately try to separate him from a girl whom he truly loves or that they would push him into a socially advantageous match against his own inclinations!. I think Jane has humility but not low self-esteem or confidence--although Elizabeth certainly has more of each!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Jane's character is to believe the best about everybody, and the worst about herself!. She has little self esteem and is extremely shy, so the slightest discouragement affects her deeply and she is crushed by Caroline Bingley's unscruplous designs!. But she still thinks well of her!. Jane is a absolute angel!. It's a good thing Lizzy is there to stand up for her!. Lizzy is much more earthy and realistic!.

I do agree that it means that she lacked confidence in herself and she's very modest!. I also think that it shows how much faith she has in the goodness of other people; she doesn't believe that anyone could go against their brother's wishes!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No, it means that Jane doesn't hold anything against them for preferring Miss Darcy over her!. She understands that they know her better!.

However, she would be surprised if they opposed their brother no matter how they felt in the matter!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

no,jane's merely stating her opinion of the bingley sisters!.though u can infer tht jane feels she could never compete and wouldnt try to with a girl-better family, class than her!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It tells me that she is very humble and is trying to convince herself not to hope incorrectly that Bingley likes her!. She also is trying to justify what they have done, rather than being angry with them for taking Bingley away, which is rather kind of her!.

The last sentence means that no matter what they wish for their brother, she doubts that they would go against his own wishes!. Which means that she thinks that he would like to marry Miss Darcy as well!.

Well, I suppose you are right, but you said that rather negatively!. I think she is considered to be more shy and humble than totally unconfident!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
