Like Jane and Zafrina, they just create allusions!.!.but Bella's protection is against those, she can use her shield to protect herself and others from it!. She can even remove the shield if she wants!.!.she can move it using her mind and stretch it to fit around certain places!.!.so that once you're in!.!.the people on the outside can't get to you!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Her gift can be forced by concentration, but that will cause the backlash, as it said when she was practicing!. And it could also be triggered by anger!. In the clearing with the Volturi, there was no backlash to her shield because she let it go completely, letting it span out!. Jane's talent doesn't work on her because it only creates an illusion of pain in her head, and if no one can get into her head, besides the baby, the illusion doesn't work!. At the last part of the book, Edward was able to read her mind because she pushed the shield completely away from her mind so Edward could see inside her head!. The only problem is, it doesn't deflect physical attacks!. The reason Jane can't cause Bella pain is because Jane's gift gives people mental pain, not physical!. Any power that includes the mind do not work on Bella!. The pain infliction isn't physically hurting them, it makes them think they are hurt!. That's why it doesn't work on Bella!. Her mind is able to block these powers out!.
