I can kind of understand where you're coming from!. It's because subconsciously we stick with what we know!. But if you think about it this way, every book under the sun has the same archetypal plot line, you can't get away from it!. You can be new and different but once you break it down, there's always a love interest, betrayal, redemption, sin, and usually some sort of good versus evil (this is always in a fantasy genre!.)
As to your question on what you prefer to do you have to make that decision for yourself!. I say whatever you're best at but most importantly what you have the most passion for!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't think it is a problem, two novels can have the same idea but be very different in style and characterisation!. The key to writing good literature is to do what everyone else is doing, but to do it really well!. In fact, there are many writers who purposfully copy stories, but put their own spin on it, which is a tradition dating back to the Renaissance!. You might be most familiar with it in regards to Bridget Jones' Diary, based on Pride and Prejudice! also, think how many movies have been released which are based on books, like Cruel Intentions, which was based on the French Classic Les Liaisons Dangereuses! The list is endless! In addition, as far as being a bestselling author goes, originality is really not required, just look at The Da Vinci Code, it's just a bunch of other people's ideas linked together with a very standard plot (the hero is called to rescue the princess and restore her to her throne!.!.!.) and yet it was a bestseller!

As far as what you should do with your life, only you can decide!. I think that both being a writer and being a musician are very hard work, but if you are passionate about them, then the hard work can be very rewarding!. At this stage you could just keep practicing both and then decide which one you prefer later!.

Best of luck with whatever you decide!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Let me tell you something!. If you read others works a lot (I mean a lot!) then it will become harder and harder for you to write your own story!. because you have others' ideas in your mind!. so my suggestion is stop reading for a while and start your own story!. That will help!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Songwriter for you!. Author for me!. Let's throw a big part-y!Www@QuestionHome@Com
