I highly recommend Jeanette Winterson's wonderful 'Oranges are Not the Only Fruit!.' (Winterson has written a number of books, but 'Oranges' is her most well-known, and most personal!.)

Alice Walker's 'The Color Purple' has strong lesbian themes; it's not the main focus of the book, but still an important part of it!. The novel is amazing (I remember staying up half the night reading, because I could not sleep until I'd finished it)!.

I hate to think of this as simply a "gay novel," but Jamie O'Neill's 'At Swim, Two Boys' is one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful books I've ever read!.

If you like historical fiction, Mary Renault's novels about Ancient Greece ('Fire From Heaven', 'The Persian Boy', 'Funeral Games', 'The King Must Die, 'The Bull From the Sea'!.!.!.) depict homosexuality and bisexuality openly and honestly, in addition to being fascinating reads!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
