The narrator/main character has a backbone, does a minimum amount of whining, and actually manages to think and act on her own, unlike a certain other fictional female narrator!.!.!. Here's the Amazon!.com summary of A Great and Terrible Beauty (because I'm horrible at giving summaries - I always either give hardly any information, or give too much and spoil the book): A Victorian boarding school story, a Gothic mansion mystery, a gossipy romp about a clique of girlfriends, and a dark other-worldly fantasy--jumble them all together and you have this complicated and unusual first novel!. Gemma, 16, has had an unconventional upbringing in India, until the day she foresees her mother’s death in a black, swirling vision that turns out to be true!. Sent back to England, she is enrolled at Spence, a girls’ academy with a mysterious burned-out East Wing!. There Gemma is snubbed by powerful Felicity, beautiful Pippa, and even her own dumpy roommate Ann, until she blackmails herself and Ann into the treacherous clique!. Gemma is distressed to find that she has been followed from India by Kartik, a beautiful young man who warns her to fight off the visions!. It also depends what your more interested in!. Twilight is basically a love story the whole time with minimal action scenes or conflicts!. Which is something that I would prefer over fantasy anyday!. A great and terrible beauty has a lot of fanasy!. In my opinion I hated whenever the girls went into the realms!. I am totally not a fantasy person so you understand how hard it was for me to read about boring things like the realms and magic!. What i did love about these books was the love storyline between Gemma, Simon Middleton, and Kartik!. But that really doesnt happen until the second book!. And the third book was the best out of all of them!. Due to the fact that the love storyline was major in that book!.
