Start with a character, and get to know that character really well in your head!. I'm not just talking about likes and dislikes and their appearance; you have the think about the deeper stuff too!. Fears, hopes and dreams, values and beliefs, virtues, flaws, strengths and weaknesses, what makes them angry, what makes them sad, their comfort mechanisms, their views of themselves and the world!. And make sure you know WHY they are like they are!.

Now, EITHER
a) make up another character; a bad guy (or gal) who stands opposed to the main character in some way - maybe they're both in competition for the same goal, or maybe one wants to stop the other from doing something important!.
OR
b) think about what kind of situation might present the greatest challenge to your character, force them to take action, and change them or teach them something new!.

Or both, of course!.

This conflict will provide the basis for your story!.

Remeber, every story must have a protagonist (main character), an antagonist (opposing character) or antagonistic force (disease, hurricane, zombies, aliens etc!.)!. An inciting incident must happen early on in the story to present the MC with a problem and kick off the action, and things must work up from there with a series of events that raise the stakes for the MC - a journey (physical, logical or emotional) towards his/her goal!. Towards the end there is a crisis and climax, where the MC faces his/her biggest challenge and makes a big decision or change, and/or defeats the enemy, and all loose ends are tied up!.

Hope that helps : )Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you don't come up with the idea by yourself then it isn't really your novel!.

"Atonement" is a rather lofty piece to aspire to!. Historical fiction is a difficult genre to work in, the amount of research required to make it true-to-date and believable is daunting to many authors!. How do people dress!? How do they speak!? What is considered taboo!? What technology existed!? What significant historical events were happening!? Etc!.!.!. All this and more should be addressed to make it appear sincere to your reader!. I'm not saying don't do it, I'm just letting you know what's involved!. The best way for an aspiring writer such as yourself to start writing is to write about what you know!. You're a teenager, so it's best to start there!. I'm not saying a "wishy washy teen drama thing", but start with a main character that is very much like yourself!. Center the story around events and things that you are interested in!. also, while starting with an outline of your entire story is a good idea, try not to adhere to a strict progression of events!. Let the story tell itself, give it room to "run and play" like the living, breathing thing that it is, but be ready to reign it it from time to time!. Another thing, don't limit yourself to a single story!. If an idea pops into your head that doesn't fit your current story, don't abandon it!. Most writers have many works in progress and bounce around from one to another depending on inspiration (or lack of it)!.

Here's some basic story ideas:

Teen becomes convinced that her neighbor is a person highlighted on "Americas Most Wanted", but no one believes her!.

Flower child in the sixties travels around in her VW!. Free love, Woodstock, drugs, and a new, interesting hitchhiker every week!.
