Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Ordinary Wizarding Levels (OWLs) are for fifth years, Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests (NEWTs) are for SEVENTH years, not 6th!. Every other year (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th) have regular end of year exams!. OWLs determine what NEWT level classes you can take in 6th and 7th year for the particular career you are pursuing!. (In OOTP the 5th years have career advice counseling with their Head of House) NEWTs determine if you can apply for the job you want!. (In OOTP the trio were flipping through pamphlets for jobs such as Healer, curse-breaker, etc!., and each one said how many and what kind of NEWTs you needed!.) Www@QuestionHome@Com NEWTS are seventh year!. The first, second, third, fourth, and sixth years all have regular end-of-year exams!. The NEWTS and OWLS actually pose a problem in Chamber of Secrets because Dumbledore cancels all exams, but what about the fifth and seventh years!? They rather need their OWL and NEWT scores to look into jobs!.Www@QuestionHome@Com Well if you've read the books it says that they take end-of-year-exams during the students 1st 2nd 3rd 4th and 6th years!. The 5th years take O!.W!.L!.S (ordinary wizarding levels) and depending on their scores with those tests, they will move on to study the tougher not required aspects of their better subjects!. They study those subjects for 2 years and then at the end of their seventh and final year they take N!.E!.W!.T!.S (Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests) to test their overall learning experience!.
