Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Beowulf was the oldest story written in English (actually, old-style Anglo Saxon)!. The English is so old, it actually requires translation into English to be understood!.

There are older stories, however, going back to oral traditions, cave paintings and hieroglyphics!.

There are also older Epics, including Homer's and Virgil's epics!.

Edit: I knew this, but wanted to check myself, so I googled!. This may be a more accurate way to say it:

Beowulf is the oldest surviving epic poem in the English language and the earliest piece of vernacular European literature!. It was written in Old English, the language of the Saxons!. Originally untitled, in the 19th century the poem began to be called by the name of its Scandinavian hero, whose adventures are its primary focus!. Historical elements run through the poem, yet both the hero and the story are fiction!. [sic]

The poem may have been composed as early as c!. 700Www@QuestionHome@Com

No!. Beowulf was written in anglo-saxon england, and people had been writing stories for many hundreds of years before that date!. Homer's Oddysey and Iliad were written in around 800 BC, about a thousand years before Beowulf!. and even they weren't the oldest, because ancient Egyptians and Sumerians had been writing stories down more than a thousand years before Homer's time!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Ngadjonji people have a story that describes the formation of a local volcano!. Carbon 14 dating of the crater gives it an age of 12,000 years!. This means the legend is likely the oldest datable story on earth , pre-dating writing by about 2000 years!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There are epic poems far older, take the Mahabharata or the Epic of Gilgamesh, for example or even the Illiad!. It could be the most important Anglo-Saxon epic but certainly it isn't the oldest epic ever told!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
