Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Proctor had been degraded and broken throughout the play, but had held on to his honesty before that point!. Refusing to cave in allowed him to keep his self respect, and therefore, by lying to please the town officials, he lost his self respect!. He no longer viewed himself as an honest or good man!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
