Question: Pride and Prejudice chapt 56!?
So I was re-reading Pride and Prejudice last night and came across one of my favorite parts of the book - when Lady Catherine de Bourgh confronts Elizabeth about the engagement rumors!. Who told Lady Catherine about the rumors!? I don't remember her saying who exactly told her!. I always figured it Mr!. Collins!.!. but then how did Mr!. Collins figure it out, especially when Elizabeth didn't tell anyone about the first proposal at first!?

It's not really important but it was annoying me!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Ladybug is right: the Lucas family had sent the Collins' the announcement that Jane was to marry Mr!. Bingley and hinted that Elizabeth would marry Mr!. Darcy!. They jumped to the conclusion that is was a done deal!. (Elizabeth was hoping that it might happen in the future since Mr!. Darcy and she would be thrown together a lot due to the marriage between her sister and his friend!.) The Lucas' took that possibility and made it as though it was so already!.

It is in chapter 57: "Something very much to the purpose of course!. He begins with congratulations on the approaching nuptials of my eldest daughter, of which, it seems, he has been told by some of the good-natured, gossiping Lucases!. I shall not sport with your impatience, by reading what he says on that point!. What relates to yourself, is as follows!.'' ``Having thus offered you the sincere congratulations of Mrs!. Collins and myself on this happy event, let me now add a short hint on the subject of another; of which we have been advertised by the same authority!. Your daughter Elizabeth, it is presumed, will not long bear the name of Bennet, after her elder sister has resigned it, and the chosen partner of her fate may be reasonably looked up to as one of the most illustrious personages in this land!.''Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't think it's ever mentioned for sure, but I believe Mr!. Bennet makes a comment about the rumor being spread by some 'good natured gossiping Lucas'!."

And Charlotte was always saying that Mr!. Darcy was interested in Lizzy!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
