There are several elements to consider:

#1) The hero needs to face real challenges and real dangers
Don't be afraid to make your hero suffer, if theres no real problems and everything is always happy, there's no interest

#2) A common mistake is trying to make up exotic names, if they don't flow well people will lose interest like authors who name the main character xan'tha'go'ba'nar'na'na-no-de-pa i mean coommmmmme on!.!.i gotta prounounce that in my head every time!?

#3) Flow your general plan before you start so you don't get lost

#4) DETAILS but not too much detail, enough so that people feel like they are really there

#5) PLOT TWISTS!.!.!.!.!.!.keep us interested, dont make the story too straight forward, lead us on and yank our chains

#6) Ever hear the saying lost the battle win the war!? Let the bad guys tromp the good guys inside the story, but let the good guys win in the endWww@QuestionHome@Com

I think the Star Wars books appear unique because of the amount of control that George Lucas (or rather his companies) has over this universe!. All the books in this series have been mapped out and are closely monitored to make sure that everything fits within the framework they have developed!.

I remember reading something about the New Jedi Order series in which the publishing company came up with a broad outline of the events they wanted to see happen, including the killing off of some major characters and the directions other characters would take as a result!. Then the authors were brought in to flesh out these stories!. Although many different authors worked on these books, they had to work closely to maintain the story thread so well, which is hard to do in a series written by so many different people!. Once you got into these books, the writing style and pace were pretty similar, so you didn't really notice that there were so many different authors!.

Other multi-author series, such as the Star Trek books, I don't think have quite the cohesiveness of the Star Wars books!. I used to read both, but when the Star Wars books started coming out with more regularity, I gave up the Star Trek books because they mostly jumped around the timeline, and you had to remember specific events from the tv series and about when/where in the timeline they ocurred!. I never had that problem with the Star Wars books, regardless of the timeline, because there was some kind of order!.

As far as writing a good story, I can't really give you any good advice, since I am not a writer!. But by taking some of the elements that another poster has given, and following some of the story structure that you see in the Star Wars (as well as other good series) books, you should be fine!. Good luck!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Star Wars has a great plot!. It is based a lot of mythological archtypes!. However it has lousy dialog!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
