Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
If something catches my eye at the bookstore or library I'll read the back and the first couple of pages!. If it hooks me, I'll read it!. Usually if I like one of an author's books I'll read more of them!.
When I'm really looking for something new, I'll ask my friends and family for book reccommendations!. I've read some really good books that way!. My mom and I mail books we've enjoyed to each other!.
I've also tried those lists!.!.!.if you like____ then you'll like _____!. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

When it comes to reading new books primarily I read upon recommendations from friends with good taste or book blurbs!. I go to the library a lot, so I often see books next to the ones I'm looking for that also look interesting, so based on the blurb I may read it!. I tend to avoid books that are terribly popular, I'm not sure why - perhaps it harks back to my teenage years and a desire not to go with the flow :p

When it comes to buying books however I very very rarely will buy a book simply based on the blurb or on popularity - it's almost always upon previous reading experience with the same author!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Either the book jumps in front of me (judging a book by it's title or cover), I read the blurb and skim through a couple pages to see if I'm interested!.!.and get it if I am!.!.!.or decide I don't have time and I'll get it later!.!.!.if it's really good I won't have the time to read but I'll still get it and read it!.!.!.

Since I typically read only non-fiction for myself (maybe a little poetry or philosophy), I'll often opt to read a book that's noted as a reference or recommendation in the book I just read to read further on the subject!. I make all these lists of books to read!.!.!.never know where that list goes!.!.!.

I love magazines though!.!.an addiction of mine!.!.all kinds!.!.!.(well, no porn), even if it's something I know nothing about I like to read them to learn something!.!.!.

For kids books, my 8 year old daughter is interested in "series" and we'll get something in a series she likes (Nancy Drew, Boxcar Children, Cam Jensen!.!.!.stuff like that) But I often note an author that writes in a style she likes so I'll get something new from that author if I see it!.!.!.

My other daughter 17 typically goes by an author she likes or something that sounds interested from the blurb or is recommended by friends - and she also reads classical literature!.

My 15 year won't read anything unless it's about boys and relationships!.!.lol!.!.!.needs a funky cover and easy reading life-related topics!.!.!.

My 24 year old has favorite authors!.!.!.he loves to read pretty much the same genre and authors!.!.!.(Terry Pratchet I think!?)

My 19 year doesn't like to read unless it's informational stuff like Photography or Computer related stuff - so it's by informational content (as opposed to his girlfriend who's an avid reader)!.

My 21 year doesn't care much for reading - but she's read "movie" books and enjoyed them!. "Notebook" things like that!. She's into fashion magazines and stuff!.

I do like Amazon's referral system though!. I've "wish listed" a lot of books based on that!.

Hmmm if I ever write my best-seller children's book I'll have to remember these factors for the marketing strategy!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I have several ways of choosing a book!.

1-Someone whose opinion I value has recommended a book!.

2-I read the book blurb and find it interesting!.

3-The book was written by an author whose works I really enjoy!.

4-A recommendation on this - believe it or not - Yahoo! Answers site catches my eye and the book or author appears interesting to me!. This is the way that I found out about Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series and Stephanie Barron's Jane Austen mystery series!. I read them both and loved them!. I wish I could remember who it was to first recommend them; I'd like to thank the person!.

You are right: there are so many books and so little time!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

On Amazon!.com they make suggestions from previous purchases!. I go by that alot, and I like series so I will check out the first book from the library and if I like it, I will buy all of the books!.
I stick to two genres generally fantasy and chick-lit!. But I like others, such as biographys, crime, historical, and historical fiction!. A good bit of advice really is just stick to things your interested in!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I go to the library usually, and there I always get caught by the covers - I know "you can't judge a book by its cover" , but I do avyway , they just catch my attention! :) - then I read the inside cover, and if it catches me, then I get it - Good Luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Close my eyes and point!.

LOL, no!.!.!.!.

Anyway, I usually read what looks good, based on the cover!. Or what my friends (usually my girlfriend) tell me to read!. I'm more likely to read a book by an author whose books I've already read and like!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I like to look at the cover, then read the blurb!. I know people always say don't judge a book by it's cover, but in all honesty!.!.!.I do :D
