Has anyone else noticed this and any clue why!. Maybe someone asked Stephenie and I forgot!. Please help, have been staring at it for 10 minutes trying to figure it out!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Dumpster is always capitalized!. That is correct!.

It is a brand name that has now come to mean the actual object!.

There are many words like that!. Formica is one!. The stuff on your kitchen countertop is called Formica because that is the name of the original company that created it!. Now, we call it Formica, but it could be made by many different companies!.

Originally, Dumpster was a company that invented a product that you put trash in!. Now, we call it a Dumpster - whether it is made by the Dumpster Company or not!. It became a generic term!.

Just some of the little things that drive editors nuts!. Pax-CWww@QuestionHome@Com

it may be that the Dumpster is like a company name which is why its in capitalsWww@QuestionHome@Com

I don't know much about the books of which you are speaking, but this is still an interesting question!. As Persiphone Hellecat said, Dumpster is supposed to be capitalized!. Dumpster was a brand name of garbage bins, but now it is often used to refer to all such items; but since it is a brand name it must be capitalized!.

There are a lot of other items/objects that are capitalized for the same reason - a lot of items started out with a brand name company, and that brand name (company) then became the generalized term that refers to that particular item!. Here are just some examples of other such genericized items: Kleenex, Band-Aid, Cool Whip, Jell-O, ChapStick, etc!.!.!.So, all of the terms that I just mentioned are actual items, but they got their names from a brand name company that started making the actual item!. And Dumpster also belongs in that category; Dumspter is a brand name (company) that is now a term often used to describe any trash receptacle!.
