Try We by Yuri Zamyatin!. Slightly pre-dating 1984, it is actually written by a persecuted Russian author who was arrested by for, more or less, 'thought crimes' in Stalinist Russia!.

You will hear Brave New World by Huxley more regularly, and that is also a fine selection for a comparison, but We has a lot more in common with 1984 and, in my opinion, is a far better book!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The key is that you are looking for another story describing a "dystopia," i!.e!., the opposite of a utopia!. The three primary examples of distopia have already been mentioned: Orwell's "1984," Huxley's "Brave New World," and Yevgeny Zamyatin's "We!."

As to which is the best comparison work!.!.!.since "We" is the oldest (1921) of the three works, it might be a little harder to understand, contextually - but that should NOT necessarily disqualify it!. You might want to have a quick chat with your instructor/teacher on what they have in mind!.

Animal Farm, another Orwell book, which is actually very similar in terms of control and dictatorship, except it's with present day animals on a barn!.

And like others suggested: Brave New World!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I like Fever 1793
but it has nothing to do with this book
It seems like the book
"A Wrinkle in Time" is similar!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Fahrenheit 451 or Brave New World!.
Neither are nearly as good as 1984, but they both deal with an Orwellian-esque future!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Brave New World by Aldorus HuxleyWww@QuestionHome@Com

Brave New World!. Or Animal Farm!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
