i have to read Rebecca for my summer reading selection and I didnt understand the ending (or more along the lines of the last page)
What was the glowing light!?
What was wrong with Maxim!?
Why did Mrs Danvers lock herself in her room!?

Manderley burned to the ground!. (That was the glowing light, and why Maxim was so horrified; his beloved Manderley was gone!.) It is assumed Mrs Danvers did it!.
Favell was very worried that he might have contracted the disease (cancer) that Rebecca had- since they had relations with each other!.

the glow is mrs!. danvers setting the house on fire!.

maxim rushes into the house to try to save mrs!. danvers & is burned & blinded as a result (also, he doesn't save her)!.

mrs!. danvers wants to die and destroy the house that belongs to the man (maxim) who hated her beloved mistress (rebecca)!.

i can't remember favells smile & wave - is he the policeman!? i think he might have suspected what really happened (rebecca goaded max into killing her so she wouldn't suffer a long, drawn-out painful death from cancer) but couldn't prove it & might have sympathized with max so he wasn't going to pursue any further action against him!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's been a while since I read the book, but I remember a little!.

The glowing light was the fire at Manderley, (they saw the flames from behind a hill, so it looked like a glowing sunrise!.)

If you mean what was wrong with Maxim at the very end, I think he's just old, because time has passed, sad because Manderley is gone, and still haunted by the whole experience!.
