Try Hatchet (and its sequel, Brian's Winter) by Gary Paulsen!. also try reading Jack London's White Fang, Call of the Wild, and To Build a Fire, all by Jack London!. These are all stories written by authors that were (are, in Gary's case) excellent outdoors men!. Though these are not handbooks to go by, reading about the characters' struggles through their eyes, you not only find out the basic needs that any human needs to survive in the wilderness, you also find out what YOU might need to learn, just for your person (yourself, your personal needs, etc!.)

Hope I helped!Www@QuestionHome@Com

You could read those "Worst-case scenario" books!. They aren't guidebooks about living in the wilderness so much as guidebooks about how not to die in the wilderness!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Liz,
Watching the news may convince you the world is falling apart soon, but I assure you, it won't happen on your watch!. You'll be okay!.
That said, backpacking is "living out" in the woods, techniques used extensively by the homeless!. It's a lot of fun!. There are MANY, MANY books written on the subject!. Besides what you get on line, go to the research librarian at your local library and ask him or her to help you find some of the older ones, which have lots of wisdom in them!. Here are several links to surviving in the wild:
