Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Hagrid was a student when Tom Riddle was, which was fifty years before Harry's time!. After he was expelled Dumbledore offered him the job as gamekeeper!. So yes, Hagrid was around during the Marauders time, in the third book he says 'They could've given the Weasley twins a run for their money!. And the headmaster during that time was also DumbledoreWww@QuestionHome@Com Chandio is correct in large part!. Dumbledore (greatest Headmaster Hogwarts ever had) offered me the job!. However, we see from Lupin's remarks that Dumbledore could not have been headmaster before about 1963 - though no later than the Marauder's first year, as Lupin was invited by Dumbledore personally, and Lupin says specifically that Dumbledore was Headmaster before his first year, which was also the year that the Whomping Willow was planted!. It *appears* from the books that Dumbledore gave me the job of groundskeeper immediately upon my expulsion!. Even as Transfiguration professor, he likely had a great deal of influence with Dippet!. It *does* seem odd, though, that even Dumbledore could have someone who was expelled from the school for causing the death of a student immediately re-instated as an employee of the school!. I suspect that I was not engaged as groundskeeper until after Dumbledore became Headmaster!. After being expelled for opening the Chamber of Secrets, Professor Dumbledore convinced the Headmaster at that time (Dippet I think) to let Hagrid become apprentice to the then groundskeeper!.
