Question: Michel Houellebecq!?
Hi!. I just finished reading Michel Houellebecq's "The Elementary Particles" and was completely blown away!.
How do you feel about this book, and who are some similar authors!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Interesting!. I've heard really good things about that book!.

I, on the other hand, just finished reading Houellebecq's "The Possibility of an Island"!. This is a book with a strong science fiction element: the main chapters take place in the present day, but every other chapter takes place thousands of years in the future, narrated by a genetic clone of the main character!.

Some of the social analysis was pretty sharp, and I have to give the man credit for the strength and integrity of his misanthropy!. But a good deal of the sci-fi plot was very weak, and in then end, the book couldn't really justify it's searing hatred of mankind!. I don't know if I have it in me to read another Houellebecq, but if I do, it will definitely be "Elementary Particles"!.

Similar authors!? He's often compared to Camus, for artistic integrity of vision!. You might want to try Martin Amis, who sometimes offers similarly highly articulate, highly intellectualized vitriol!. And in some ways the Houellebecq I read reminded me of my favorite author, Samuel Beckett (although Beckett is much funnier): try Molloy and see what you think!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
