Rushdie's 'The Satanic Verses' was a novel that included reference to the Muslim prophet Mohammed!. In the book, Rushdie mentions a very early incident (which may be real or not) where Mohammed is tricked by an evil angel into including certain prayers to Pagan gods into the Qur'an!. This is of course anathema to all monotheists including Muslims - praying to anyone but God!. Mohammed later retracts these verses - hence the title of the book!.
The book was seen as balsphemous by many Muslims who do not accept the early biographies of Mohammed that mention this incident!. The publishing of the book was therefore accompanied by a fatwa (permission of execution) to be placed on Rushdie's head by the Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran!. The fatwa remains in place to this day and although Rushide has never been attacked, others who worked with him on the book have, some fatally!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There are about four verses in the Koran that appear as if Mohammed was recognising the existence of pagan gods in conjunction with the existence of Allah, who should be the one and only God!. These have been termed the Satanic Verses, and it is claimed that Mohammed never recorded these are was tricked into inserting them into the Koran!. Rushdie explored this concept and developed a story-line around the controversy which would question whether the Koran was given by Allah, or was potentially man-made, or even Satanic!. As a result it was considered blasphemous to religious Muslims and the Iranian Ayatollah Komeini released a religious ruling or fatwa against Rushdie, calling for his death!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
