Perhaps not the greatest opening line, but certainly the one I've read most often!. And yes, in my youth I was so pretentious as to have memorized that!.
I also knew the opening lines to War and Peace, Look Homeward, Angel and Atlas Shrugged!. I no longer do, and beyond the first eleven words I had to check on this one, particularly for punctuation!.
