It means someone who enjoys pain!. Whether it be their own or another's!.

good question! i looked it up on dictionary!.com but they used other big words that i didn't understand, it only made me more confused! lol heres what i got though!.!.!.you might understand it better than i do! lol

its someone who LIKES hurting themselves!. Edward is saying, like, "why did i become involved with this human girl!? it will never work i am just hurting myself, yet i know and still i cant stop!"
