Obviously, if you are the one who is driving, it can mess up not only your eyes but the rest of you, too! Drivers should be watching the road!.

If you're a passenger, the first risk is that you'll be reading in a bad position (say, with the text unnecessarily close to your eyes)!. That may not be good for them, at least in the short run, though I'm not sure there's any likely longterm damage!.

You should also stop reading if there's a lot of vibration!. If the text is dancing in front of you, don't fight to keep reading; give it up until you get to smoother road!.

If you're not driving, not bouncing, not in the dark, and not holding the book too close to your eyes, reading in the car (or on the bus, or train, or a plane) can be a great way to pass the time!. However, motion sickness can be caused by too much close focus in a moving vehicle!. So give your eyes (and your brain, which is trying to resolve coflicting information from eyes and inner ears!) a break, by looking out the windows for a bit at frequent intervals, and stop immediately for a good long break if you feel the least bit nauseous!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Its only a bad thing if you are prone to car sickness because of the conflicting messages sent to your: you know and can feel yourself moving but the page of the book you are reading stays stationary!. If you begin to feel sick, just sit in the front seat, open the window and look straight ahead until you feel better, at which point (if you are up to it) you can return to your book :)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Obviously, if you're driving, don't read ;) that's common sense!.

Some people get nauseous while reading in the car--it has to do with the eardrums, oddly enough--but if you don't get sick, there's absolutely nothing wrong with reading in the car!. I can't survive a more-than-10-minute car ride without reading, myself!.

As for books, I'd suggest the Twilight or Uglies series to keep you occupied!. also great reads are City of Bones by Cassandra Clare and Tithe by Holly Black!. Happy reading!Www@QuestionHome@Com

Try listening to an audio book while riding in your car instead of reading!. You could listen to one with headphones, or if all of your comrades are interested in the book then play it on the car's CD or tape player!.

Check them out from the library!. There are many books available in audio format (nonfiction, fiction, young adult, juvenile)!.

I like fast and action-packed audio books, because the narrator reads out loud slower than you do in your head!. So, books with slow moving plots get dull quick!. I suggest The Da Vinci Code, or anything along those lines!.

This also frees up your hands to knit or crochet (if you're into that:)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

We've always been told this!. I think it's because early cars vibrated a lot more than the current models and you couldn't keep the book absolutely still!.

Of course, the other reason could be because your parents want you to look at what's outside instead of what's under your nose!.

It could be true!. I don't know what my eyes would be like today if I hadn't read in the car from age 6 to 18!. At that point I was the driver and didn't have the option!.

I don't feel it had as much of a difference as reading under the covers with a flashlight!. That I don't recommend!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

As far as I know, I think it is bad only under a couple of circumstances:

1!. You are the person driving (believe it or not, I've seen people reading the newspaper, texting, etc!. while driving)

2!. If actually makes some people sick (I can read while in a train but not in a moving car, it makes me nauseous)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Some people feel a little carsick when they read because they are looking down at a book while the car is moving forward!. If you won't feel nauseous then it's alright!.

If they're talking about reading in dim light, it's not true!. Reading in dim light can mess up your vision a little bit TEMPORARILY, but it's never permanent!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I've read in car (not while driving, of course!) all of my life!. Had glasses when I started, had same prescription for around 40 years until diabetes started altering my vision recently, so from my life, don't see a major effect!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

No, the only thing that can mess up your eyes is genetics, looking at something for too long without taking a break, or sticking some kind of bad thing in your eye!.!.

Just take a break once in a while and you'll be fine!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

no I don't think so!.
I mean if whoever is driving,
is a good driver, you should
be able to read in peace,
[&& steadily if they avoid those
bumps in the roads]

Anyway,
enjoy your 8 hour trip
&& your book/books = ]

I don't think that it should mess up your eyes!. It may make you sick to your stomach but it shouldn't mess up your eyes!. If the print is really small then maybe but just a regular book!?!?!? Who knows, ask a doctor!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It is very bad to read books when driving in a car!.
When just a passenger however, reading may do nothing at all bad or it may cause some motion sickness!.
It will not harm the eyes!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't think that reading in the car is bad, plenty of people do it without ending with serious problems!.

Only if you're trying to drive and read at the same time, or the lighting is bad!. Other then that it should be OK!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

it depends on the person!. it can make you head hurt, but it won't permanatley or temporarily mess up your eyes!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It depends on the person!. For me, I can't read a single sentence without feeling sick!. I'm not sure about the eyes thing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
