one dark night in the middle of the day
2 dead boys got up to play
back to back they faced each other
drew their swards and shot each other
a deaf policeman heard the noise
came and killed the 2 dead boys
if you don't think this story is true

Oh sure, used to recite it in grammar school, and you know how long ago that was! My version started out:

One bright day in the middle of the night,
Two dead boys stood up to fight!.

I remember my grandfather reciting it to me in the 50s, this is in England!.
No idea of its origins though!.
Who's that guy who used to write nonsense poetry!?

I don't know, but I can tell you I heard it when I was only 9 years old, in central Illinois, in the 1950s - it has been around a while!Www@QuestionHome@Com
