Question: To the budding writers and novelists!?
What is the first rule of writing!? If you Google the phrase "the first rule of writing is," you will find a thousand different responses!. A few examples are:

-to write what you know
-that you must have something worth communicating
-to use fewer words than you think you need

Is there a firm, number one, all-important rule that all writers must follow!?

Personally, I like what Sean Connery said in "Finding Forrester"

"The first rule of writing is to write, not to think!. Thinking comes later!."

Your thoughts!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

i think that the first rule of writing is not to force anything!. it is SO pathetic when you read something and you can totally tell that the person who wrote it was trying wayyy to hard!. like when there is a character description that says something like!.!.!.her brilliant green eyes were just one of the assets to her beautiful, angelic face!. her honey-blonde hair framed her face in delicate curls!.!.!.!.so on!. it's disgusting!. i think a character description should say!.!.!.she had grass-green eyes and silky blonde hair!.!.!.there, simple!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I totally agree with Sean Connery!.

You MUST separate the writing and editing processes, otherwise you'll never be happy with the words you get down!.

Just write, write, write!. it doesn't matter how cr@ppy it is, you can always fix it later!.

Better to have 5 pages of rubbish at the end of a writing session than nothing at all!. At least it's a messy lump of "clay" that can be modelled later on!.

It's taken me years to realise this!. It's still scary sometimes, and my finger always itches to press the Delete button at the end of a "bad" writing session!. But I resist (well, most of the time!)

personally i think sean connery is wrong!. when writing you have to have a plot, u have to know the ending otherwise u'll be wandering aimlessly in a boring story!. i think the first rule would be to know everything that happens in the story, from beginning to end in ur head, and then start writing after its been thought out!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I totally agree with what Sean Connery said! If u wanna write somthg 1st write, then think of it!. Change it maybe!. But write it!. The 1st thing that comes 2 1's mind is most of the time better than after given several thoughts, I believe!. It depends of course but that's the general idea!. So I'm with!.!.!.

"The first rule of writing is to write, not to think!. Thinking comes later!."

Well, I think that Sean Connery might have been a genius then ^^

I'd say that the first rule for writing, the most important rule, goes something along the lines of 'just write what comes naturally, the rest follows after'!.

That's my strategy at least ^^Www@QuestionHome@Com

Make the first sentence count!.

(Everything else (plot, character, theme, etc!.) follows from there!.)Www@QuestionHome@Com
