Depending on what kind of history you like to read, Alison Weir's books are very popular as they deal (though not exclusively!) with the personalities involved!. Try this:

I've read many of her books and found them tremendously readable, but haven't yet tried this one!. Difficult to keep up with her output, and my other reading! I especially enjoyed all her books on the Tudors!.
