It depends on the complexity, detail, the degree of realism expected and the medium!.

Any good sketch artist can whip out a decent and recognizable portrait in less than a minute!. Of course it takes longer for a finer, more detailed image and longer yet for a subtly shaded image and still longer for a good ink drawing and even more time if color is expected to be added!.

I used to work in color marker and I can say that with my level of practice, I could produce a good, marketable portrait in about eight hours!. But, understand, portraiture is quite different than most other forms of art!. A similarly detailed image of building, such as a house would take about half that time!. An ink drawing of the house, without ink washes about half of that!.

How much time you take depends on your skill level which can only get better with practice!. In other words it should take as long as it takes to do the job right!. Only YOU can motivate yourself to spend enough time!. You can't expect us to give you a definitive answer, especially if you can't provide your own motivation!.

My suggestion is that you spend a lot of time practicing sketching from real life!. The more time you spend practicing the bettery you'll get!. The better your skills, the faster you can work!. Everything is relative!. There are no absolute standards, especially in art!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It totally depends on the person!. Some people do really great drawings very fast, others take a very long time!. I had a hard time with this myself, and I found that by overcoming this mental obstacle I was able to improve my work a great deal!. When I put aside the idea that a good drawing can be done in one sitting, or one day, it was liberating!. So now my drawings take 10-15 hours over the course of two to three weeks (I'm a full-time mom with little free time), depending on how big they are!. I'm even working on taking longer!. I've seen other artists who can take 100 hours or more on a single drawing!. Drawing is a process, not just a result!. Draw because it's fun, because you enjoy it!. It takes as long as it takes!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I know no professional artist that spends less than 6-8 hours on a job!. Just depends on the complexity of the drawing and the medium you're using!. Pencil drawings tend to be more detailed and can take a long time!. Plus you want to make sure the end result is what you're after!. If it is than you're done!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I find that when I really want to draw something I have enough patience to do it!. It probably depends on how good you are and how much patience you have!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It really depends on the person!. But,you should take your time for ALL drawings!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
