It helps to know what you are shading, because what you are shading determines how you shade!. Start with something simple and smooth, like skin or plastic!. Use a small circular motion to build up a nice, even tone without adding streaks, adding layers as you get to the deeper shadow!. Use different pencils, particularly those in the higher B-range, to get darker values!. Do it slowly and evenly!. You can blend with a blending stump or your fingers or a tissue!.

For things like hair or fur, use linear strokes proportional to the length of the hair/fur you are drawing!. That is, don't use long strokes for the short fur on the bridge of the nose, for example!. Build up layers, getting darker as you go into deeper shadows!. Use a kneaded eraser for highlights!.

Whatever the texture you are drawing, just be observant!. Really look at what the values are doing!. Don't be afraid to go really dark if you need to - it will add life to your drawing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The very simplest way to think of shading is to imagine there is a light shining on your subject!. The areas facing the light are light!. the areas moving away from the light are dark!.

If you try to keep your lighting consistent it will look better!. Always think about where the light is coming from!.

When your done shading this way, you can add cast shadows (like the shadow your body leaves on the ground!. Just don't make them too dark because that takes away from a nice drawing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
