Try The Treachery of Images by Rene Magritte (the painting of my avatar)!.
It has an obvious pipe as the subject, but there is a subtitle that reads 'This is not a pipe'!. It challenges our rational and conscious thought when perceiving!.
Les Demoiselles d'Avignon is also a good one!. We expect all five women to have a human facial representation of a woman!. But only three of them on the left have the calm demeanor while the bizarre looking faces on the right are actually influenced by Picasso's interest in African sculpture!. In general, the jagged planes of the background and the subjects conjoin to become a sort of drapery!.

Oh, and any works by Henri Matisse is good!. Especially, Harmony in Red!. People who saw it dismissed it as having almost childish representation of space and objects, with its flatness and disregard toward the human figure!. But in reality, Matisse was trying to express himself through color!. To him, colors besides just what we see in an object, became the ultimate reality of expression!. So, his works were not the result of his lack of artistic skill, but rather his way of perceiving the world!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No, that's not a good choice for your essay!. Why do you think Guernica was misinterpreted!? Picasso started painting it just a couple of weeks after the bombing!. It was a very big deal at the time and actually helped the world become aware of what was going on!. It is very clear what this painting is all about!. Even if you don't know it's history or what specific event it was depicting, you can still pick up the violence and tragedy: mothers crying over their dead, innocent children, etc!.
Why don't you try looking at (and reading about) some paintings by de Chirico, Rousseau, Franz Marc, Edvard Munch, Franz Klein, Max Beckman!.!.!.
Now remember, don't choose a painting because YOU don't understand it!. Do some quick research!. It's so easy with the Internet!Www@QuestionHome@Com

try the flutist by remedios varo, its true meaning is actually about evolution, and its a great painting, look into it, some of her other paintings may be good to look at too

hopes this helps a littleWww@QuestionHome@Com

Anything by Willem de Kooning!.

Because of his particular style of painting, everyone seems to think he hated women, when he did not!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Try The Family of Carlos IV!. Everyone think it is a satire, but that claim is dismissed by Robert Huges in his biography of Goya!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
