If the school is a good one, expect a lot of work!. Be sure to take excellent notes!.

You need to find out from the school what type camera you need!. Some schools require their students to use a 4x5 view camera for the first year, using smaller format cameras for "every day life" shots in addition to each assignment shot on the view camera

If you do need a camera, since you are majoring in photography, buy either a Nikon or Canon 35 mm SLR until you start taking digital photography (maybe the second year), then all you will have to do is buy the digital camera that matches your growing system!.

Don't just arbitrarily buy a Nikon or Canon!. Do a lot of research and find out which one is the system you will be using for thirty or forty years!. This is most important, because once you have a couple of bodies and four or five lenses, changing to the other system can be nearly as expensive as getting a divorce!. Look forward at the Professional grade DSLR's to see what the future may holdWww@QuestionHome@Com

Good advice from fhotoace above!.

Plan on being creative in your photo labs and projects!.
You will also be taking a few art classes, and possibly a physics class related to light, and how it affects the objects it reflects on!.

I would suggest going to an actual professional camera store, look at several cameras, and get recommendations from the staff!.
There are also a few good mail order houses that have catalogs of all kinds of photo equipment - including light meters, lenses, tripods!. And obviously the internet is a good resource!. Read reviews on cameras from different sources online!.
One suggestion: Don't start out with a real expensive camera!. Sounds like you already know a good amount, but after you take some classes, you will then want certain features on a camera!.
Although digital is the predominant technology, you will probably have classes that still require you use film!. Yes, the actually still make it!. One class may be focused just on black and white photos!.
Be open minded as to what you photograph!. Some people prefer objects as their subjects, others prefer people!. One girl I know focused on taking photos of doors!. New, old, doors from barns, etc!.

Good luck!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

From personal experience as both a student and an educator in the field of photography, each university and art school is quite unique in its approach to teaching photography so it is really hard for me to give you a broad generalization about what to expect from your particular photography department!. Instead I suggest you take the initiative and introduce yourself to your instructors and let them know what you are about and what you as a student expect from them!.
Now in terms of cameras, this all depends upon what field of photography you are majoring in: fine art, commercial, photo journalism!. If you are majoring in fine art or commercial I would suggest both a medium format as well as large format camera with a used Kodak digital back as well as some film magazines/holders!. You probably won't be able to buy everything at once, but I would suggest starting with a Hasselblad 500 series preferably used (these cameras are versatile and can either shoot film or digital based upon the magazine)!. As for a good digital back, I would suggest a used Kodak DCS back, should run around $2500-$4000!. This back can then also be adapted to a large format view camera, an essential tool if you plan on doing any kind of product photography or architectural photography!. If there is one generalization about photography school I can make is that it cost money!. However, without giving us more information as to what field of photography you are interested in as well as how and what you shoot, it is near impossible to give you a good idea as to what camera would be best for you!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I own FUJIFILM FinePix S5600!. I'm not sure exactly how much it costs, but I find that all the pictures turn out amazing!. I always thought it was a crap camera until I read the owners manual!. I have never taken a photography course but I remember our photographer for our school, used to take terrible photos, then he went and took a course and his photos are now immaculate!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
