Only possible symbol I see could be the pure white head cloth!. She is obviously a peasant and is plain of appearance and in a plain brown dress!. But then she has on this brilliant, almost angelically pure white head dress which picks up the white light from above!. This may symbolize her purity and nearness to God - she is created in His likeness!. She is almost blessed from above with a crown of light!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It is a realist painting!. Was he using symbolism, I don't think so!. I see only a painting of a young girl perhaps a bit ostrasized by her surroundings!. Was she distrustful of society,family or the artist!? I don't know all I know is what I see!. I see a guarded innocence!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
