The purpose of the over expsure in that photo seems to tease the viewer into seeking contrast and detail that is not really there!. It is designed to intrigue the compositional mind of the artist and challenge them to slip beyond mundane routine!.

As a regular practice I can't imagine it moving beyond that!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Its called high key and it is popular its also something that takes some technical skill with lighting to do right!. With high key you want the picture bright but you want contrast low!. At the same time you have to balance that with making sure there is enough contrast to do the main subject justice!. You have to have both low light ratios and low reflectance ratios

As others have said it is something that comes in and out of vogueWww@QuestionHome@Com

IMHO, it's exactly what you said it is - "a popular trend right now!."

Fads come and go in photography, just like with clothing, car styling, etc!. With the WWW and digital photography, it's easy enough to do something different and get it recognized!.
