Question: IF I want to use a non AF-S lens on a Nikon D40, do I have to set everything manually!? Will Aperture or !?
shutter priority or any of the modes work!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Nothing will work, automatically!.!.

You will have to use M on the camera for shutter speeds and set your f/stops manually on the lens as well!.

In order to determine exposures, you will have to use a hand held light meter!.

However, this is not a bad thing seeing as you have some excellent lenses out there found at yard sales and flea markets that many don't want anymore because they be - manual!.!.!. and thus, sold cheap!.!.

PS - If the manual lenses are AI'ed (AI-S) and you get a better body with a AI ring built into the camera, then yes, you will have full TTL - Thru The Lens - meter coupling, which many Nikon bodies and the re-known Fuji S-5 do now!.!.

I own the S-5 and I can put all my older manual focus lenses on this body and use them just fine!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

As photoace said AF and AF-D will meter in all modes but will not autofocus!. AF-s and AF-I will work in all modes and autofocus

AI and AI-s will only work in manual mode and will not autofocus or meter but they will still take great photos if you use an external meter of the sunny 16 rule Www@QuestionHome@Com

AF and AF-D lenses can be metered in any mode; P, S, A, M but must be focused manually

Here is all you need to know about all the lenses made by Nikon

Nope! Should work just fine!. Just make sure you get one with an internal moter, or else there will be no AF!. Aperture and stuff should still work just fine if you don't though!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
