It is the third panel of a tripytch and represents Hell - it is in the Prado museum now!. It was painted in the 16th century which must have been pretty scary to the folk back then!. I wouldn't define it as surreal - visionary perhaps!. The panel is about the size of the average domestic door so the amount of detail is not overwhelming in reality - although it is undloubtedly busy - the eye finds it difficult to settle as there is always some other torment to look at!. They are too much like a traditional depiction of hell and the underground death societies, and of satanists!. There is a lot of negativity in there, people being tortured, men being sexually assaulted!. There is fire, smoke and quite a lot of none comforting settings and quite a chaos!. I always wonder if the artists were disturbed during the time they painted those!.Www@QuestionHome@Com That's a painting by Hieronymus Bosch, not sure when it was done, he was a 15th and 16th century Dutch artist, but it is brilliant, isn't it!? A bit scary and surreal, yes, but stunning in its execution!.
