For general use, the AF is fine!. For Macro, portraits and anythng else where I consider absolutely tack sharp focus to be essential, I focus manually!. also, I use manual focus in low light!.

I have a split screen rangefinder w/microprism collar that I think is great!. It's also fun to watch the image snap into focus when the AF works!.

I like the auto focus fairly well!. When I began shooting with my 85mm 1!.2 lens, I had to change my techniques due to the incredibly shallow depth of field!. I switch focusing points constantly, since recomposing the shot once you've focused is out of the question!.

I also use the servo mode and focus with the back button almost all the time, since it allows for better predictive autofocus!. (Shooting with Canon!.) Www@QuestionHome@Com

I usually stick with the AF result!. I may move slightly right or left to center up a more "focusable" object to help it out, kind of like using a split-image focus aid in the olden days!. My lenses let me over-ride the autofocus setting instantly if I want to, but I rarely do this!. I might fiddle with it and not like it, so I end up letting go of the shutter release button and taking another shot at AF!.

On macro, though, I let it autofocus and then hunt back and forth once it has locked in!. By this, I mean I actually move closer and farther a bit until the parts I want to be in focus are in the best focus!.

My eyes have gotten bad over the last few years!. Following cataract surgery I have no close vision at all!. I switched to auto-focus several years ago, and use it almost all the time!. If I'm doing a macro or an especially artistic landscape I might try to manually focus, and in dark wedding venues I pre-focus manually on a spot for the processional!. Otherwise I pretty much rely on autofocus!. The good news is that autofocus lenses are getting better all the time!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

For most things automatic focus is fine!.
In portrait photography I like to focus on the lights in the person's eyes on the manual setting!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

When I use my 135 mm f 2 for portrait, I usually manually focus it though!. The depth of field is too shallow to depend on the camera!.
