Are you sure this isn't homework for school!?

Really, to understand Gothic art, you have to understand Romanesque!. As my art history teacher at Rhode Island College said, the thing to remember about Romanesque art was they thought they were building Roman buildings -- and in Italy they were!. These were large impressive buildings which let in as much light as they could, and were well-constructed!. But these were important buildings and every town was competing to build bigger ones, in the hopes that these would attract relics which would make them a center of pilgrimage and the pilgrims would spend money!.

With the Gothic style, or "French Style") (Opus Francigenum) they succeeded brilliantly!. The pointed arch, flying buttress and ribbed vaults allowed them to create these large chambers which let in light MUCH better than the older buildings had and allowed people to feel like they had gone to heaven in the middle of all this beauty!. Chartres's Rose Window is a good example of what they did with light!. It was the Abbey Church of St!. Denis in Paris, built by Abbot Sugar in approx 1137 (though obviously it continued for a long time after that) which was first!. Chartres Cathedral, whose rebuilding was begun by a Bishop of Chartres who was a friend of Abbot Sugar's, is the first masterpiece of High Gothic!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
