Question: My local gallery wants to charge me 40% to consign photographs!. That is really high!. How to negotiate!?
The last couple of galleries I worked with in the Southwest charged 22% and 25%!. Do most East coast galleries charge more!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I have found 40% to be the usual rate in most galleries!. Some galleries have memberships you can buy that will cut the rate some, but I never spend that extra money if I am not going to be displaying there on an ongoing basis!.

The local gallery here where I displayed on a regular basis charged a 30% commission on any sell!. Unfortunately, she has closed the gallery and I now just submit to call for entries to various galleries!. So far, they have all charged 40%, so I don't think that is out of the ordinary!. I don't think there is room for negotiation!. It is, after all, their gallery!. If you don't pay it, someone else will!.

It IS a big chunk out of a sell though!.

The galleries I've talked to on the both the East and West Coasts charge a commission of 50% (San Fran, LA, and NYC)!. You might be able to negotiate a break if you sell a certain amount of work though or if you aren't in big city markets!. Times are tough right now, and if you are selling you can use that to your advantage!.

Good luck!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
