Question: Painters: Do you blend your own colors or buy individual hues of paint!?
I only buy red, blue, yellow and black, and from there I just mix up whatever shades I want to use!. I think its so, so much fun to create colors- I can't IMAGINE how broke I'd be if I had to buy each shade individually! But, buying the primary colors plus black and white in bulk amounts is so much easier, and makes it so much more fun!.

Except, I do also buy pre-mixed silver, white and bronze shimmer paint!.

So, my question is: What do you do!? Do you mix em up!? Buy individual!? Or a little of both!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I agree with your methods very much!.Instead of black, I use raw umber and ultramarine blue together!.For a warmer black,I use a little more umber and for a cooler black,I use a little more blue!.Straight black is fine but you get a little more control and depth with my method!.
Ya gotta have yellow ochre and it's nice to have a mid green, orange,or some nice purple tone that catches your eye,but most colours are derivatives of the primaries anyway!.
If you tone down a colour with it's compliment and whatever medium you're using, you may not need White as much as you think!.
We can spend our whole life studying and experimenting with colour in so many ways!.Lets experiment, break rules and just have fun with colour!.

I buy a lot of different colors because it simplifies the mixing sometimes!. The ones I stay away from is green and black!. On my palette you will find lemon yellow and medium yellow, yellow ocher, medium red light, deep red, alizarin crimson, cyan blue, deep blue, titanium white, and flesh pink!. For my blacks I mix alizarin crimson with cyan blue or deep blue, it makes a beautiful rich black!. For greens I mix my blues and yellows!. I love the pink color because it breaks the blues and reds up beautifully when you want to make highlights in the sky or any where else!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I paint with oils and buy starter sets of 18 average size tubes and a set of 10 larger size tubes!. Just about every color i can think of is there if i need it and requires minimal mixing to get the color i need!. I never know what i will be asked to paint so i make sure i have what i need at the ready, which saves me an incredible amount of time and paint!. I have a particular pallete of colors i am partial to and never use a color straight out of the tube, i always mix another color to it!. My work can be checked out at hellosanantonio!.com under artist name GUERRO1!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

3 reds, 3 blues, 3 yellows, 3 earth, 1 green, 1 violet!. Then mix all other colors!. This is my watercolor palette, so white is my paper and black is mixed!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

I'm a china painter and do both!. China paint is relatively inexpensive, but some colors are best mixed!. I grind them together sometimes, and other times mix them on the brush!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I tend to buy three of each primary shade- a cool tone, neutral, and warm tone- plus black, white, brown, and metallics if I need them!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
