Question: How can I get better at drawing!?
I've always loved art, since I was very little!. As a child I was always engrossed in this fantasy world that I created in my head that I called my own!. I liked the idea of being able to draw what my mind could see, but I was never really good at it!. In my early teens I took creative writing classes, thinking that if art may be too hard for me to express my feelings and dreams, I would paint a picture in the reader's mind without an actual canvas!. I dropped the idea of being a writer after I realized that the way people saw the scenes I created in my stories were completely different to how I saw them!. I want people to see these worlds and characters in my head the way I see them, so after 3 years of writing, I decided I'd rather go back to art!. I have a few questions:

- If I take regular art classes at a workshop, what sort of things will I be taught!? Or would I be better off practicing from books!?

Second thing: Based on my drawings now, what stands out to you most and what doesn't, that I should improve!? Sorry for the long, lengthy answer, but I need some opinions!. Thanks in advance!. :)

Hiya,

Im not really too sure if my answer would be very useful - but I just wanted to say you have a great imagination!. Although I don't really come from an illustrative background in my experience (I have been to college for three years and have just started on a fine art degree) I have never come across a workshop, tutor or teacher that has shown me 'how to draw'!. The best bit of advice I was ever given was to 'look at what you are drawing' which seems pretty obvious I know, but it helps!

Perhaps you should try some 'fine art' drawing, by that I mean fruit, life drawing, still life etc!. to build up your drawing skills!. I think doing this would help alot with your illustrations!.

A really good book is 'Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain' by Betty Edwards!. It gives you a few 'tasks' to carry out and helps you to think more about how you draw and what you are drawing!.

I hope this is useful, take care and good luck!

One thing you're going to have to accept as an artist is that some people are going to misinterpret your artwork!. The same way they were misinterpreting your writing!. It's bound to happen and the best thing to do is just accept it!. What's important is whether or not they like what you've done!.

As for your art, you've got some good ideas but you really need to spend more time on them!. Take your time, sketch out your ideas first!. Don't just jump in laying down dark lines that you can't erase!. Keep your drawing light and loose and just keep reworking it, darkening it as you go!. You should have the whole thing, background and all, sketched out before you start going into any detail!. also, drawing thumnails beforehand helps as well!. This way you can see what looks best and how best to arrange things before you spend too much time on anything!. Make at least 5 - 10 thumbnails for any one drawing you're going to do!. make evry one different!. Move astuff around, see what looks best before you go to work on the main drawing!.

School definitely will help as will books!. Look at peoples art!. See what they do better than you and use it to improve yourself!. And don't forget, practice practice practice!. That's the only way to get better!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
