Question: Canon Powershot g9 and band photography!?
I have a couple years of experience with dSLRs, but I sold my camera and took a break from the world of photography!. I don't plan on buying a dSlr just yet, (I am a freelancer), and I do not have experience on band photography!. This will be my first attempt at band photography!. As I know a Dslr will provide much greater results, its all in a matter of I really don't want to go through the process of getting a editiors/venues permission!. Motion is still a difficult subject for me, I still need practice before going all out just for bands!.

I was thinking of buying an external flash and a filter 58mm lens adapter!.

Yes I'm aware it will probably end up costing as much as a SLR!. I don't want a SLR right now, mainly because I won't be doing anything with it compared to a lightweight point&shoot with manual settings!.

Should I go through with this!? answers/opinions!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would suggest getting an slr for concert photography!. If you're planning on spending as much on your g9 than an slr, then why not spend the money on an slr!? the g9 is a top of the line point and shoot but i wouldn't recommend it for concert photography!. I use a canon rebel xti for my concert photography!. You should go out and buy a camera body for cheap and then spend money on lenses!. A good lens for concert photography is a 50mm f1!.4 or 1!.8!. The 1!.8 is about $100, and takes very amazing pictures!.

This is my concert photography: http://www!.flickr!.com/photos/ambeanerxco!.!.!.

Most photos were taken with the 50mm!.

I did do a search on flickr though, and I found some pretty nice concert photos taken with the g9!. http://flickr!.com/search/!?q=concert%20ca!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You will not get great results using the G9, because it's not really up to the task!. It's ISO capability is very poor and no better than most other point & shoot cameras!. You will definitely need to always shoot in RAW to get the best out of it!.!.!.but, when compared to a dSLR, it's RAW performance is terrible!. Plus, you will find that it's lens is far too slow for low light work!. A slow lens combined with poor high ISO performance is just asking for trouble!.

What is nice about the G9 is that you can shoot in RAW and use an external flash!. If I were not using a DSLR, that is the way I'd go!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

if your shooting bands, you should use a dSLR - first you will look like a chump shooting w/ other photographers and having a a little P&S!.!.!.secondly, especially in lower lit shows, you need a lens with AT LEAST a 2!.8 F-stop!. I am using a 1!.4 if that tells you anything!.!.!.!.

A lightweight P&S won't cut the mustard, trust me I've been there, done that!.

*NEVER use a flash at a concert, the band will hate you! (unless you know them and ask permission first :P)Www@QuestionHome@Com
