The best affordable camera for making B&W photos is the Wista 8x10" view camera!.

From a technical point, a good B&W is generally judged by sharpness and tonality!.

Affordable alternatives are the Canon 5D or the Nikon D700!. They will not produce the tonal range of a view camera but they will be capable of making some good prints nonetheless!.

And yes, use post processing software to produce your B&W files!. They almost always look better than something produced by in-camera processing!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Your right, its far better to control the conversion to B&W in software than do it in camera, which normally just desaturates which is probably the worst technique!. I would also advise shooting in Raw if you can as then you have all the information recorded by the camera, so you can convert the same shot as a soft and dreamy, or as a hard and 'Gothic' its up to you, all your options are still open!.
