I could be wrong here but this is what I get from them!.

Both represent 20th century art styles, (one cubist and the other surrealist!. This is stated in the descriptions given for each picture so I guess that, at least, must be correct)!.

Both use abstract forms to represent the subject matter!.


Cubist

a style of painting and sculpture developed in the early 20th century, characterized chiefly by an emphasis on formal structure, the reduction of natural forms to their geometrical equivalents, and the organization of the planes of a represented object independently of representational requirements!.


Surrealist

A 20th century literary and artistic movement that attempts to express the workings of the subconscious and is characterized by fantastic imagery and incongruous juxtaposition of subject matter!.

Both paintings have shape (self-explanitory), space (positive and negative space), color (they obviously have different colors), value (they have different lightnesses and darknesses), and line (self-explanitory)!.

For Principles of Design they both have movement (your eye moves around the artwork), balance (symmetrical in the second one, asymmetrical in the second), contrast (blue on orange and black on white), pattern (the checkerboard and the different lines repeat), unity (all the elements work together in both to create one artwork), and emphasis (the blue part stands out in the first one, and the man stands out in the second one)
