Alright, you seem to be quite confused!.!. They both have the ability to use long exposure and I'm 95% positive that they both have a timer!.

also, the underwater housing and fish eye lenses are both accessories!. Canon has their own fisheye which Nikon has their own fisheye also!. They're both quite pricey and so is the underwater housing!.!.

You're comparing two totally different cameras!. The D40 is Nikon's entry level camera while the Canon 40D is Canon's amateur camera!. Obviously these are just tags and don't affect your image outcome as much as you, the photographer, does!.

If you're looking for a small lightweight, easy on the wallet, but still great DSLR check out the Nikon D40, D60, Canon XTi, and Canon XSi!.

If you're looking for something more rugged then check out the Nikon D80, Nikon D90, Canon 40D, and Canon 50D!. If you have a limited budget then see if you can find a used 30D or a new Nikon D80!. (I would go with the D90 or 40D)Www@QuestionHome@Com

okay, you were doing real good until you mentioned the underwater part!. serious, the nikons and canons are all good!. especially in kit form!. if there are camera stores in your area i'd check them all out and handle the gear and check out the prices and accessories and the package deals!. budget might/might not be an issue!. an underwater housing may or may not be available for the camera body & lens set-up that you like!. google everything and put something together!. one option would be to invest in quality gear and go cheap on the underwater camera, if its just for occasional use!. how-ever, if your serious about your H20 work, then, by all means get a quality housing to match!. now!.!. get out there and do it! W!.W!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

***EDIT: if you look at both the canon and nikon web site's you will see they both offer fisheye lens and they both will work on those cameras!.***

both have 'bulb' options for long exposure, timers and offer fisheye lens!. The best thing to do is try using each of the cameras!. I was like you, wondering about specs, but i just went to the store and tried using each camera i was considering!. For me i liked the button placement of the nikon, but i wont say that will be the best for you or anyone else!.

also, think about buying used!. I was looking to spend 500 for a dslr and was looking the same models you are until i found a wedding photographer selling a D80 for the same price!. I checked it out and ended up with a much better camera!. Finding that deal also helped tilt the tables to the nikon brand because no one else was selling a canon model of comparable features for that price!.

Like lots of others will tell you, hold the camera!. Try shooting with the camera!. Think about what features you use and how easy it is to adjust them on each camera!.

But seriously, go to a store with a SD card and try the cameras!. Make the clerks power them on and actually practice shooting with them!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I havent used canon dslr's, but i can attest to the nikon d40, it would be perfect for a beginner!.

however, a fisheye lens will probabaly cost more than the camera itself from reputable manufacturers!. you can settle for fisheye attachments but the image quality isnt as great!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If your budget is a concern then buy the Canon 400D(XTI in some places)!.!.it is a bit old but if u can flex ur budget to 200$ more!.!.buy the Canon 450D(XSI in some places), and it will suit u fairly!!Www@QuestionHome@Com
