The numbers and letters refer to the softness or hardness of the pencils!.

Think of the HB pencil as being the standard, average, office type pencil, the type people use for general use, rather than sketching!.

"F" pencils are generally harder than this!. Then as pencils get harder, they are described as how "H" or hard they are!. 2H being a little bit harder, 3H more harder, 4H even harder, and so on!. These pencils are good for detail, they stay sharp, and good for drawing thin lines and sharpening up edges!. They aren't very dark in colour though, and you have to press on harder to get a mark!.

"B" pencils get softer than HB!. This means you have to press on less hard for a darker tone, and they generally look softer, more grainy and 'fluffy' on the page, and they generally get darker, and softer, and more textured as the numbers get higher (9B being the softest and darkest!.)

The thing to watch with these softer pencils is that if you layer them up too much, and press on too hard etc, the pencil leaves a shiny look on the page!.

If you use some of the very soft pencils in your work, remember to "fix" the drawing when youre done, to prevent the softer pencils smudging all over the place, you do this using spray fixative which you can buy in art shops!. It also makes some of the shininess go away!.
Some good drawing paper could also be a good investment!.

Just experiment and have fun!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I assume you have not tried them!? H is hard, F is fine (though that is not what the lettering means, just makes it easier to remember) B is soft!.

HB is like most pencils you have ever used in your life, half hard half soft, if you look at any of your writing run of the mill pencils, they will have "HB" on it!.

B is soft, and then the higher the number the softer it gets!. 9B is almost like chalk, good for rough drawings and lots of shading, bad if you wish to do small detail work!. Just like 9H is great for technical drawings if you want to use a ruler and draw a perfectly lined car, but bad for making shadows and shading!.

Most artists swear by 2B or 3B as their favourite drawing pencil!. Though it really is a matter of taste!.

Use 2B and upward for heavy shading, and 2H and upward for details and line work!.

~Scratches my head at those!.~

I guess you would have to go to a specific school to learn the special uses for those!.

It's all a matter of what you're comfortable with!. I don't use anything special!.!.!. just a !.7 MM mechanical pencil, because it's always sharp to a point, and the !.7 can withstand heavy handed pressure!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
