I'm a cannon guy so I would say that the Canon 40d is the best!. Body only is right at $1000 for the body!. The Nikon D80 would also be a good body at under $1000!.

If you could go to about $1100 then I would also throw in the Nikon D90!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I have Canon cameras and swear by them!. Canon just came out with the 50D, its a DSLR camera, 15!.1 megapixel, 6!.3 fps!.!.!.etc!. Its a little out of your price range, about $1400 body only (B&H Photo)

The Canon 40D is more in your price range, about $950 body only (B&H Photo), the main difference between the two is the 40D is a 10!.1 megapixel!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

you could buy a used camera body and spend more money on lenses!. the lenses are pretty much more important than the camera in its self!. The LENS you would want for portrait photography would be a 50mm lens!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
