Question: Is there a better value in FF dSLR photography than the Canon 5D!?
With the 5D Mark II coming out I suspect the 5D is about to become an even better value than it was!

I very much doubt your going to beat the 5D for value any time soon!. I suspect the next bargin will be the Nikon D700 - the 5D Mark II will almost certainly hit the appeal of that camera, plus a higher megapixel full frame Nikon is expected in the next few months!.

You have an attitude much like mine!. You seem to see a bit of humor in all things!. I have come to one opinion, though, and that is that you have too many cameras already!.

Everyone who tells me about the Mark II, and I was in a store listening to a salesman talk about it yesterday, say it is the best thing since sex and slice bread!. I am, however, totally satisfied with sex and slice bread!. While you are spending money on things that will be obsolete in a year or so, I just traded around and got me something that is better and has been made obsolete by people trading in their film units for digital!. I had this nice RB 67, and I loved it!. However, since most of my photography requires me to walk long distance to get the pictures that I take, the RB was a bit much!. My pack, not including the necessary very strong tripod, was about 50 pounds!. That included four lenses, several backs, one of the nice 99 pound Mamiya prisms along with other RB necessities as well as three OM1 and OM2 cameras and a Yashica Mat 124G!. Included with the Olympus was, of course, an assortment of lenses!. 50 pound pack is being conservative!.

So I sold my RB at a loss, and there was no way to win (of course) and then walked into a camera store where I take manual 35mm SLRs to be sold to students who need them!. That store had a 645TL at a good price, so I asked him how much he owed me, and that amount covered 70% of the price of the 645, but then he had three other cameras of mine that he had not sold!. He traded even, him taking possession of my three other cameras!.

The deal is this!. Of the many cameras that he has sold for me, the average price I paid for them at garage sales and from individuals, was $20 complete with all of the glass that went with them!. He had, all total, 7 camera to sell, so 7x20=140, and that coverted over to a $400 deal on a camera which I obtained for no outlay of cash!.

It is nice that I have reduced my weight pack substantially and in addition got the best new lenses that Mamiya makes for the 645!. I had to purchase a few things from KEH, but now I have the perfect fit for a 67 year old man who trapses up and down mountains to shoot scenic views, water falls, and animals!. That means that if I encounter a bear, snake or wild hog that I can still throw a substantial pack at him to slow him down before I shoot him with my 645!. I have a really sharp wide angle, a nice normal and a nice prime 150, complete with filters and two prisms (one metered; one not)!.

I guess what I have used too many words to say is that I have no need or desire to have a digital camera whatsoever!. I have one, which I told you the other day was doing a time exposure on dust falling!. I have a solid grand tied up in that and all it is being used for is that my wife takes pictures with it when she takes pictures!. I am about 67, I ain't changing, I do well with what I have and I have enough outdated film to last me to the end of my time!.

So the salesman's talk about the 5DII fell on deaf ears and I ended the conversation showing him some pictures of old tractors that I took in Virginia!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
