first off, study a rose up close pay attention to how the pedals form and look closely on the texture they have!. feel the rose with your finger tips!. if you have few roses to look at do that!. study how the pedals form and move when place down against something or standing free!. when you begin to sketch study what kind of shapes the pedals produce!. dont stand too far away from the rose when sketching!. use your implement to sketch a gesture of the rose a few times to get the feel of movement of the rose!. you want to capture the essense of the rose , what i mean is the characture of it, the feel of it, the curves and dips!. now that you have that , work on the shading, a good sketch has lots of levels of shade!. from very light to very dark!. depending on your style of drawing, and what you are using to draw with, use that meduim to bring out the characteristics of that rose!. texture,color,ripples,shades and contrast!. and how the light hits it!. use a light at 45 degree angle to make your drawing more interesting producing nice shadow effects!. always sketch from life and everyday to sharpen your skills!.
