In color theory you learn that a tint is a color mixed with white and a shade is a color mixed with black (or the complimentary color!.!.!.you know opposite on the color wheel!.) A tint will appear lighter and a shade will appear darker!. This allows a simple color (or hue) like blue to stay just that and then add highlights (tints) and shadows (shades)!.
