Question: Can anyone review the Nikon : AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4!.5-5!.6G IF-ED!?
I want to use it for sports photography!. The zoom range is perfect but can I expect high quality images at 300mm!? I will probably be using a monopod if I cant hold it steady by hand!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's very decent in the 70-200mm range but the image quality deteriorates from there to 300mm!. Even so, for the price it's the best you'll get at 300mm!. All of the other Nikon and third party 70-300mm versions are the same or worse (albeit cheaper)!. To achieve a noticeable improvement at the 300mm range you're looking at an $800 investment - the cheapest option I can think of is a discontinued, used Nikon 80-200mm with a 1!.4x TC!.

Until I could afford my 400 mm f/2!.8, I used the older 70-300 mm ED for shooting sports and air shows!. I never had a problem with it, so my guess it the VR feature should be fine especially using a monopod!.

That said, remember any VR or IS scheme will add to the time it takes to auto-focus and stabilize the lens!. It is for that reason, I turn off the VR feature when shooting sports most of the time, especially when shooting skateboarding and MX bike racing!. Timing the shot at the peak of action with no VR or IS is just fine, but that tiny delay can cause missed shots!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I haven't used that lens, but the VR system does wonders to cut down shaking at long lengths!.

Using it on most Nikon Digital SLRs, it'll be equivalent to a 105 - 450 lens on a 35mm camera!.

I've used film & digital Nikons for 35 years!. I've stayed with Nikon lenses for the quallity & design!.

One tip, shoot with a shutter priority program!. That will minimize any shake and freeze your subject!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Some of these are not meant to be great photography, but rather a test of the lens or a camera comparison!. Look around and open the boring images and you'll probably see the tests that way!.

I put the focal length under most of my images and if I forgot to, just click on the link for "more properties" and you will find it!.

Here are some at 300mm!. Click on "All sizes" for better evalution!. I don't think any of these were taken using a tripod, so make allowances!.!.!.
