Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: If we wanted to show what it looked like realistically, it would be faster to snap a photograph!. Artistic "distortion" can capture a mood or a certain quality of the energy around a subject that a photograph cannot!. Of course it's a subjective interpretation so the artist is showing you what he or she felt or experienced!. Www@QuestionHome@Com Modern Art, beginning with Expressionism coincided, possibly not by chance, with the introduction of photography!. With photography to convey images, artists and consumers of art objects no longer perceived the same need for realistic representation in painting!. By exaggerating objects and distorting them, artists came closer to abstraction and were thus able to convey an idea or impression that existed only in the mind!. The process proceeded to the era of Minimalism and then Conceptualism, where the art object completely disappeared, as exemplified in the happenings that were associated with the Dada movement and in the performance art of the Contemporary era!. Even though people often find this type of art to be offensive, it was real to the artists at least emotinally and intellectually!. They found in it an expressive force and an abstract quality!. It enabled them to express emotion!. It was influenced by African art!. Picasso and Matisse were two artists who drew strongly on African masks!. The practice of using distortion to convey emotion in Western art began around the the time when paintings became distorted and skin tones became pale in the Mannerist era that characterized the art of the late High Renaissance!. It reapeated itself in pendulum fashion when Baroque art in its Baroque Romantic style follwed the Mennerist era of the end of the High Renaissance!. It was revived again in the Romantic era that followed the Neo-Classical epoch!. The use of vivid colour, as well as swirling and often distorted brushwork is also very important to the process!. Many artist felt and continue to believe that conveying emotion is more important than linear accuracy!. Www@QuestionHome@Com In my personal experience I had achieve to do good realistic portraits of people or things but I can not image doing that if it save my life, I love to do things different than other people because if you can replicate a thing were is the fun I love to show my painting and ask the people what they see in them or represent to them is more interesting than having someone said " that's a great parting it looks like a picture" I do not want my work looke like that, hope I explain it to your like take care!.Www@QuestionHome@Com I agree if someone wants some realistic then that is what photography is for!. If someone wants to show something that does not exist they can use realism techniques!. Expressionism can show passion and creativity of a person!.
